Listening to the new songs that the radio puts on All they seem to song about is this thing that they call love Call me skeptical, call me insecure I don't know They want to give a constellation and the moon on a stick To their latest proclaimation, I must have missed a trick Do I wanna hear about two more people getting it on? I don't know, but I don't think so And it's all "yeah, yeah" and "ooh babe"s and "I want you back" "If I were with you babe, I wouldn't feel trapped" Big concert brand bands with shiny bronze tans Is it all pretend? These loves songs, they don't make sense Scrolling through my latest Facebook applications Contemplating inviting the object of my affections 'What Drink Are You?' 'Will You Be My Best Friend?' I don't know Check my empty inbox, have a practice on the guitar Did no-one think to inform me that the single life is this hard With so many friends how could I feel lonely I don't know, but I never thought so And it's all "yeah, yeah" and "ooh babe"s and "I want you back" "If I were with you babe, I wouldn't feel trapped" Big concert brand bands with shiny bronze tans Is it all pretend? These loves songs, they don't make sense I sit there and watch her I suddenly wonder I didn't know I liked you Do you find me attractive too? Struck dumb with nothing to say I've become a love song cliche Oh no! From now on it's 'ya-da ya-da' And it's all "yeah, yeah" and "ooh babe"s and "I want you back" "If I were with you babe, I wouldn't feel trapped" Big concert brand bands with shiny bronze tans Is it all pretend? These loves songs, they finally make sense They finally make sense

Wanna hide your love? Keep it covered up? Did you do something at the weekend that you hope no-one brings up? Everybody’s got a dirty secret, or so it seems And they really, really need it to stay discreet The ears prick up and the eyes grow wide And then the rumours spread like wildfire “Did you hear about Jamie J? I heard he’s having a kid!” “Did you hear what Katie said? Sounds like she’ll be quids in” “Guess which supervisor’s having an illicit affair!” “Can you believe that short, short skirt Christina wears?” Well there are some people Who like to throw away Casual comments Of things they have no say in They can be mean And they won’t just let it be You’d expect better from your own team! Wanna go online? The bids are up to nine Well you better check over your shoulder You don’t want the wannabe to catch ya Everybody’s got a job to do, or so it seems But she’s got some intriguing news that you have to hear Well there are some people Who like to throw away Casual comments Of things they have no say in They can be mean And they won’t just let it be You’d expect better from your own team! “Did you hear about Jamie J? I hear he’s having a girl” “You could win a cruise in the prize draw, think I’ll give it a whirl” “Did you know that Robbie smoked ganja back in his college days” “Did you know our new IT guy is in fact gay?” Well there are some people Who like to throw away Casual comments Of things they have no say in They can be mean And they won’t just let it be You’d expect better from your own team!

You grew up and I was there To fill in for your Daddy’s lost weekends Then I moved in for a little while While your Mother made her plans And I just sat around until school was out (Playing World of Warcraft) I had not yet figured out what family was about Oo, won’t you be a friend of mine Or would that waste your time? I want you to be a friend of mine Even if it doesn’t seem that way sometimes You grew bored and I was there to play with your toys My old Transformers Were a staple in our brotherhood Your Mother understands How it must be strange that I’m not around (I’ve moved on and out) If I’d loved her the way I shoulda, we coulda worked it out Oo, won’t you be a friend of mine Or would that waste your time? I want you to be a friend of mine Even if it doesn’t seem that way sometimes

He never wanted you and that's the painful truth You dread the day will come when he wants somebody else You wish you'd never met, you wish that you were dead You miss his sweet clumsy negligence Heaven knows that it has been great up until now You can't force someone to love you You can't force someone to care So just pick up the pieces Keep smiling and take it from there There she goes again, walking round my head She would smile at me, then I'm lost in my fantasy Will she break my heart before I've made a start Maybe now's the time that I should start making my move You can't force someone to love you You can't force someone to care So just pick up the pieces Keep smiling and take it from there

Dumb it down and play it up That’s how the general public will swallow it up Ad campaigns and daily news D’you get the feeling we’re being used Brush your teeth and go to sleep Let us take care of your problems professionally Buy a house and renovate It’s one more thing that we could come and take By now we’re thinking all the same things But I don’t care Who ever wants to be controlled We are all emotional souls who can’t make up our own mind So make it up for me, go ahead; Think my thoughts better than me Beat my heart better than me Walk my walk better than me (And no, I don’t want to see you try) Enjoy my job better than me Sing my songs better than me Love my loved ones better than me Are you sure you want to interfere in my affairs? You have your say, you have your vote You can pick which politician says do what your told Don’t be mean, you can go green Get out there and plant some trees Watch TV, read magazines You fund the fashion, film, and music industries Don’t smoke and don’t do drugs A good education will get you to the top By now we’re thinking all the same things But I don’t care Who ever wants to be controlled We are all emotional souls who can’t make up our own mind So make it up for me, go ahead; Think my thoughts better than me Beat my heart better than me Walk my walk better than me (And no, I don’t want to see you try) Enjoy my job better than me Sing my songs better than me Love my loved ones better than me Are you sure you want to interfere in my affairs?

Home 03:16
This year I said goodbye to my abode The place that I considered home That kept the world from me It holds a lot of memories A lot of lessons learned in there If I could win the lottery I would buy it back again You see, to me it’s more than just a property But I had to leave We just didn’t have the money I’ve settled in, but these new walls are not ideal It doesn’t have that homely feel Deliveries impede my sleep Few people come to see me Though I have my double bed to share If I could earn a million I’d buy my home back again You see, to me it’s more than just a property But I had to leave We just didn’t have the money

I didn’t want to be the one to make you feel bad I’d hoped I would be the man who you’d never had When you first cried to me, you just seemed lonely So I figured let’s give us a chance As you sit home all day I'd think of all the better ways For you to spend your time But you’d made up your mind Before we’d even met (your mind) You knew you’d have no regrets (your mind) While I kick myself for trusting you I won’t abandon our baby too If things with us were more on the level I wouldn’t keep it in; I’d tell you As you sit home all day I'd think of all the better ways For you to spend your time But you’d made up your mind Before we’d even met (your mind) You knew you’d have no regrets (your mind)

Well why didn’t you say that all you wanted to see Was the gift I’ve been blessed with so you’d finally talk to me I’ll never figure you out, I just can’t read the signs Do you think you want me now, or are you still undecided? Well, let me tell ya; I don’t wanna want you anymore, you’re not right for me I don’t wanna want you anymore, I can’t get any sleep I have been OK with this because I’m too scared to ask You are too pretty for me, with way too much class Your social life’s just beginning, mine’s coming to an end You’re the One That Got Away; but did you comprehend? I don’t wanna want you anymore, you’re not right for me I don’t wanna want you anymore, I can’t get any sleep And I cannot take it anymore To hear you stomping through the office door I can’t bear looking up to see Yet again, you won’t acknowledge me I don’t wanna want you anymore, you’re not right for me I don’t wanna want you anymore, I can’t get any sleep

Bye Bye Mama 02:51
Me and my ol’ Mama lived on this farm since my birth She sits there sipping whiskey while I do all the work And as I mop my brow from toiling in the hot midday sun I hear my Mama yelling; “Boy, git my bubble-bath run!” I had enough I tell ye! One day I just snapped. Let me tell you what I did… And so I hit her with a shovel and throwed her down the well That was the end of her drinking troubles and the end of mine as well Oh if I had another chance maybe I wouldn’ta been so hasty ‘Cause when I’m thinking long and hard about it, I know - I shoulda grabbed her gold teeth! Coulda got me a few bucks for dem… I got dreams to fulfil Well I never been to Texas And I never been with a perdy whore I ain’t never drived a shiny Lexus And I’ve never shopped in a fancy department store… that’s right! Now I’m counting all the cash from my Mama’s secret stash Cooking up my own version of Mama’s corned beef hash When I hears a gentle moaning from the cupboard under the stairs I go to have a look-see and find out; Mama’s come back from the dead! Mama’s come back from the dead! Mama’s come back from the dead! You low-down good for nothing son of a- I’m sorry Mama! I’m gonna haunt you so bad, you gonna stop eating just so’s you can’t make no more crap to git scared outta ya! You’re comin’ wit’ me t’hell! Mama’s come back from the dead!

Old Friend 03:26
I thought I missed you! You were once a good influence on me We’d see my friends, together And you’d help me figure out the mysteries You’re not as strong as I remember Not as kind to me And for the whole week after You make me hate me Well I’m not concerned that you’re illegal Don’t give a damn if you make me ill You’ve had your run, I’ve had my fun I’ll find my own way to how you make me feel The party’s far from being over Another beer and I’ll head on over Who needs chemicals to feel divine? I’ll have another drink on my friend Jack And be just fine Hard House and Ambient Trance Should have never been given a chance You opened my mind to repetitive beats Pulling me to the dance floor and off my shy seat I could talk to girls I’d never met Feel their pain, even not fear sex! You can make best friends with biggest nerd Discuss in depth; theories you’ve never heard Well I’m not concerned that you’re illegal Don’t give a damn if you make me ill You’ve had your run, I’ve had my fun I’ll find my own way to how you make me feel The party’s far from being over Another beer and I’ll head on over Who needs chemicals to feel divine? I’ll have another drink on my friend Jack And be just fine Well I guess it goes hand in hand I’m a victim of a punk rock band I don’t expect you to understand When nothing goes along as planned And I know it won’t be bland This ship’s sailing out unmanned ‘cause I’ve grown quite attached Just me and my old punk rock band Now I know This is the way for me old friend

All's Fair 02:52
Yay, I want you to have freedom in love Yeah so, don’t think you are pushing your luck What if she’s in your Top 3? Will you act upon it? Don’t hold back for the sake of me Your happiness depends on it We’ll get along, friendship is strong I’ve had my chances What’s done is done, you can’t go wrong So take your chances Yay, I want you to have freedom in love Yeah so, don’t think you are pushing your luck What if he’s Mr right? Will you let him go? What will you learn from hindsight? You think you’re better off alone You may be scared, but we’re all there To help you open up When all is said, what’s to compare? So take your chances Yay, I want you to have freedom in love Yeah so, don’t think you are pushing your luck I’m giving you an open door ‘Cause all is fair in love and war We’re not at war Yay, I want you to have freedom in love Yeah so, don’t think you are pushing your luck

The warmth has gone, the days draw in It’s harder to remember where you’ve been Thinking back to more joyful times Was your love for them a lie? I’m not ready for a brave new world Will I measure up for my little girl? You question your validity Can you keep it together financially? Kids today are harder to please But I’ll never let you catch me on my knees I’m not ready for a brave new world Will I measure up for my little girl? Well you gotta learn from your mistakes They cannot be undone You only grow from your risk-takes Going after what you want You’ll go after what you want You’ll go after what you want Try to get through the working day Don’t worry about what they might say Wonder how you’ll ever get by Without them there keeping you alive I’m not ready for a brave new world Will I measure up for my little girl? Well you gotta learn from your mistakes They cannot be undone You only grow from your risk-takes Going after what you want You’ll go after what you want You’ll go after what you want Life don’t matter to me Life don’t matter to me It's all about you Before the fall Before the fall, I loved you

Living the life, with a real life I don't know how you do it Beautiful child, beautiful wife And working an honest living Doesn't anything scare you under those awesome tatoos? Following only your own rules in your democracy I got a body in the trunk that I'll never find A lack of ambition is my biggest crime I don't wanna be a rock star on the cover of Time So why the envious eyes? Hell, I say I'm done with waiting Along for the ride with limited time I'm pretty sure you can do it You are our voice with all the right lines Rest assured by your charismatic smile Doesn't anything scare you under those awesome tatoos? Following only your own rules in your democracy I got a body in the trunk that I'll never find A lack of ambition is my biggest crime I don't wanna be a rock star on the cover of Time So why the envious eyes? Sixteen was too soon for me to decide What the hell to do with the rest of our lives We all wish we had the luxury of hindsight For lack of a guiding light I got a body in the trunk that I'll never find A lack of ambition is my biggest crime I don't wanna be a rock star on the cover of Time So why the envious eyes? I never had the guts to do what I fear Putting on a brave face to hide how I feel Now I watch other bands with younger energy With envious eyes

about

As a Punk Prospect virgin I was dreading my first review in case I was given a lemon, a wet lettuce or a damp squib, whatever that is. Luckily for me I was asked to review Before The Fall by The Vindickers. I'm not saying I struck gold or even found a diamond in the rough but what I have discovered is a band of 70’s punk style with a modern twist and a great sense of humour thrown in for good measure. They’re a refreshing change from your common as muck copy cat pop punk band that lurk around every corner these days.

The album opens strongly with songs about love, relationships and
rumour spreading and back stabbing in the work place. It has a feel of
“we know three chords and we’re gonna use them” but that’s no problem, Green Day have done it for years and Status Quo even longer. The album flows well with a mix of fast and slow songs, and it’s always good to find a few Ska riffs in a punk song - these boys know their roots. One of my favourite tracks 'I Wanna Be a Geek' takes the piss out of nerdy folk who play Role Playing Games and know way too much about Sci-Fi. Not being a geek myself (ahem) I had to look up many references especially about learning to speak LEET (or 1337 apparently), this being (according to good old Wikipedia) an alternative alphabet using mostly numbers or symbols to replace the standard letters. Sounds like a load
of 80110(X5 to me….

With a value for money track count of sixteen you’d expect a few album
fillers, but surprisingly there aren’t really any. Some songs are more
worthy than others but all play their part. Even the bizarre 'Bye Bye
Mama', a Country and Western song about a red neck killing his Mother isn’t out of place, being another piss take it fits in with the fun feel that runs through the album. Saying that though, there are many songs of a more serious note. 'Old Friend' tackles drug addiction and 'Home' is about financial difficulty and losing your, well, home. The end of the album is as strong as the beginning. the title track is an anthem in waiting and guaranteed to get the crowd waving lighters – err sorry I’m showing my age - waving mobiles and nodding their heads in unison. That runs into the final track, or should I say tracks, it’s like a well-known oil - 3 in 1. 'The Gen. Of Ease' would have been a brilliant track to end the album but the surprise is what follows. Sounding like a cover of an unknown Buzzcocks or Undertones song, 'Cuppa Tea' is The Vindickers own work about living on the dole which really takes this reviewer back to his youth and it doesn’t seem right that the best song in my opinion is “hidden”, but maybe that’s the point.

The final, final track took me even more by surprise. A club mix of 'The Gen. Of Ease', called 'The Gen of Peas', complete with Cher-like synthesised vocals. Another piss take and another sign of a band that are having fun, and luckily not a sign of things to come from this band. Still, it gives my Daughter a track to look forward to. If I had to make one criticism it would be that at times the vocals are too mellow. There's a need for an edge, some venom, some bite and I'm occasionally left wondering how a song would sound with a Billy Joe or a Fat Mike singing but hey, now I'm really nit picking! Before The Fall by The Vindickers is a great listen, it has an authentic feel without being dated. The changes in musical styles and mix of humorous to serious lyrics mean it never gets tired, so I give it 4/5. And if you’re interested, a damp squib is an event which people think will be exciting but which is disappointing when it happens.
So there you go.
